PhD student needed in Forest Ecology and Management at SLU

Healthy Waters: The role of protective measures to minimize negative forestry impact on water quality
The main objective of this PhD-student project is to investigate the role of different forestry related measures for improving water quality. A range of new collaborative strategies and concrete measures have recently been initiated, spurred by the implementation of the Water Framework Directive, to minimize forestry influence on water quality. But how effective have these strategies and measures been? The connection to the state-of-the-art scientific understanding of the effectiveness will be evaluated and tested. The overall purpose of this PhD project is therefore to explore through what mechanisms water protection in areas used by forestry can become most effective. The work will be to evaluate the role of different actions for minimizing the impact on water quality by using scientific literature, field data collection, computer based models and water quality data from the Krycklan catchment study (www.slu.se/Krycklan). This position is part of a multi-disciplinary project ”Healthy Waters: The role of collaborative governance to minimize negative forestry impact on water quality” which includes both natural and political science researchers. The PhD-student position is full-time and covers 48 months and the holder of the position is expected to achieve a PhD-degree. The PhD student is expected to start the project during the spring of 2014. The affiliation of the PhD student will be the Department of Forest Ecology and Management in Umeå, Sweden. The department has an international character both when it comes to research and teaching.

Qualifications
We are seeking a highly motivated individual. The candidate should have good communication skills, a strong work ethic, be a team player and work well in a strong research environment. We are searching a person with a MSc. in Forestry, Physical Geography, or related field. Familiarity with digital terrain analysis, water quality modeling and/or forestry impacts on water quality is a merit. Experience with field data collection methods is preferred, and a driving license is required for conducting the field studies.

Forms for funding or employment
Employment as PhD student 4 years

SLU is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

A person has basic eligibility for third level education if he or she has taken a second level qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second level.
Those who met the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 180 Higher education credits or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of 2015."

Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.

Post-doc position (22 months) in modeling plant biodiversity data, IMBE, University Aix-Marseille, France

Position Location: IMBE, (http://www.imbe.fr), University Aix-Marseille, France

Position Description:
A post-doc position is available in the Mediterranean Institute for Biodiversity and Ecology (IMBE) a joint CNRS and University institute with 220 permanent researchers in the field of terrestrial and marine ecology. The position will last two years and is based in IMBE, directed by Thierry Tatoni and Wolfgang Cramer, this program is directed by Agathe Leriche, Cécile Albert and Arne Saatkamp, in Marseille, France - a region noted for its access to outdoor activities.

We target to start this post-doc in February 2014. The post-doc will be part of a larger European neighborhood partnership project (ENPI) with research groups from Rome and Cagliari (Italy), Alexandria (Egypt), Beirut (Lebanon) and Sfax (Tunisia) on vulnerability of coastal ecosystems. This post-doc will deal with existing GIS and floristic databases and the candidate will interact with researchers in our lab working on a broad range of projects in climate/global change impacts, macroecological patterns, phylogeography, functional ecology, landscape ecology and conservation biology.

The project aims to model the impacts of fragmentation (spatial organization), habitat degradation (land use change) on plant biodiversity of coastal ecosystems. In this project we aim to fit to data, plant distribution models (accounting for spatial explicit migration, neutral (stochastic) processes and community assembly rules) in order to assess the impact of spatial configuration on plant diversity and be able to simulate potential future changes in spatial configuration of these habitats. This project will benefit from a large data base of plant distributions and co-occurrences as well as extensive environmental and phylogenetic data gathered in previous projects and will be in contact with other regional to large scale model project in our institute.

We look for a person with a Ph.D. in landscape ecology, plant ecology, biogeography, global change ecology/geography and with strong mathematical/modeling skills willing to work with spatial explicit biodiversity data. A background in distribution (niche) modeling, neutral theory of biodiversity & biogeography and modeling of dispersal processes at the landscape level will be particularly helpful. We look for a candidate with excellent English language and especially writing skills (publication record), willingness to work in a team and strong experience in modeling techniques in one of the above fields, knowledge of using R. Knowledge of French language or willing to learn basics is a plus, but not required. Salary will correspond to French post-doc researcher positions which include social assurance coverage.

For more information regarding the position contact Dr. Arne Saatkamp (arne.saatkamp@imbe.fr). For application, please supply a single PDF document including: (i) a one page statement of interest and prospectives concerning the project, (ii) a 2 page curriculum vitae including publication record and (iii) two reference contacts that are willing to give information on your previous work (mail & phone), applications as early as possible, the position will be assigned at latest 31. January 2014.

International training of trainers on IWRM

Facilitating water stewardship from a basin perspective
One of the difficulties to use water wisely is the division of responsibilities between different authorities. This often results in fragmented and competitive approaches in the use of rivers, lakes, wetlands and other water resources. Yet for current and future water security it is vital to maintain and restore wetlands as a critical water infrastructure. Read more
